Dr. Edwin R. Walker
Striving for a disciplined mind is one of Dr. Walker's purposes
for Queens students and himself. Because of his continuous desire
for knowledge, we in the college community are challenged to seek
the truth and to develop "the capacity to respond with interest and
understanding."

The near-approaching culmination of prepara-
tion . . . the pieces of "clay Freshmen" have been
molded by dedicated craftsmen, shaped by their
H'ords . . . mo\ed to action by their challenges
and guided by their insights. The glaze will soon
be dried.
Motionless we wait while a million emotions
revolve within us. The joy of exciting anticipation
looms . . . only to be replaced by doubt and fear.
A cyclorama flashes varied feelings: remorse for
opportunities shunned . . . nostalgia for all that
has been familiar . . . fears of inadequacy to meet
the demands of wife, teacher, executive. Reluctance
passes into eagerness. The thrill of the potentialities
of the new ... a setting wherein untried goals
may be aimed for . . . the refreshment of change
as the cycle of learning begins again— now tempered
by the wisdom and experience of four years.
Practice teaching, a diamond, applications, in-
ter\'iews . . . bridging the gap between here and
there— but offering only hints as to what lies ahead.
Struggle, joy, pain, and sorrow can only be sup-
posed. For now, the all is united by the silent
prayer of the each . . . that acceptance will be
vitalized with eagerness and enactment tempered
bv wisdom . . . and the courage of love.

We see our reflections in a ripply pool,
clearer than ever beFore . . . Yes, we're the
juniors ... a class seldom seen but often
heard ... A voice from the balcony indicates
concern for social regulations . . . school
policy. The unsettled members with a pre-
dilection for change have gone, creating a
heightened necessity for unity ... an un-
seasoned scholastic enthusiasm broadens hori-
zons . . . deepens understanding of the vitality
and coherence of the part to the whole. We
consider the positions for which a two-year
apprenticeship was designed.
The end becomes a conceived realitv
a feeling of accomplishment gi\-es courage

Freshman ... a word around which revolves many
starthng ideas, feelings, emotions. From a career of un-
sophisticated fun, spasmodic study, and carefree spirit
emerges the Freshman . . . looking ahead with eager
anticipation and with tearfulness anticipation of
a new, exciting life . . . tearfulness of one which is in-
volved and trying, yet advanced and challenging.
The Freshman enthusiastically enters this world only
to find herself confronted with many problems the
fear of not being accepted by the college community,
of not knowing how to approach new situations and
people. Frustration mounts, nostalgic feelings arise, emo-
tions become sensitive. The attempt to assimilate into
the life of the college proves disheartening; fears of in-
adequacy to meet demands accompany every thought.
C.raduallv the Freshman discovers people with whom
she can share her thoughts . . . with whom she has
common interests, ideals, aspirations. Basis for lasting
friendship is formed. Gradually Queens discloses the
image of her way of life to the Freshman. She realizes
that she can give of herself to the college and in this
realization, slowly finds her place at Queens.
Freshman ... a word which intimates an end o^ a
beginning, a new start ... a new person ... a pefson
readv to move ahead and to face the future with courage
and determination.

STUDENT
GOVERNMENT
ASSOCIATION
Through its xarious committees, including
Executive, Dralft, Budget, and Dining Hall,
the Student Government Association is able
to report with some accuracy the opinions
and concerns of the student body to the fac-
ulty and administration. The Publications
Board, Independent Reading Program Com-
mittee, National Student Association Co-
ordinator and the student representative to
the Faculty-Lecture-Concert Series operate
more or less independently of S.G.A., but are
still an outgrowth of it. The Student Govern-
ment Association is the basis and backbone
of most student organizations on campus.

Student Legislature is a body comprised of representa-
tives from all the major organizations, the classes and the
three student publications. In order to a\'oid conflicts,
the members co-operate to meet the students' needs in
various areas. Therefore, Student Legislature is respon-
sible for initiating and passing legislation which is given
to S.G.A. for final decision and action. An art film series
to be sponsored by R.A. or the Faculty-Lecture-Concert
Series, several new election procedures, and the attitude
of the campus toward N.S.A. are several issues discussed
by the student body this year.
There has been a revaluation of the organizational
framework in every area to disco\'er and remedy the over-
lapping of responsibilities. Through this, co-operation
and the individualism of each of the groups will be de-
veloped more fully.

JUDICIAL BOARD
What is our purpose and position on this campus? How
effective is our Honor Code in the Hfe of each student?
What are the Hmits of our jurisdiction? These questions
jrc revaluated and discussed by the Judicial Board and
the student body each year.
A recognition of the fact that students seek not only
for truth and knowledge through their intellectual pur-
suits, but seek also for qualities which strengthen char-
acter in their college growth is a major concern of Ju-
dicial Board. Realization of this goal can only come
through student respect for self and for the entire college
community.

COUNCIL
Linda Cashwell. President
The various house presidents and the officers of Resident Student Council con-
stantly seek to revise and make practical rules under which the boarding students
live, eliminating regulations no longer relevant. Their main duty is to uphold the
merit system by dealing with its offenders, in order to make the dorms and campus
as a whole conducive to student growth and self-control. To be a co-ordinator between
the resident students and the administration is the major purpose of this council.

QUEENS CURRENT
A new name and a new format this year made the
old Flier a larger and fuller publication with many new
features. The new name, Oiieeus Current, provides not
only a psychological lift for the attitude toward this paper,
but also expresses more clearly and more adequately the
philosophy behind the paper than did the older name,
The Flier.
The regular editorials, the column announcing cul-
tural events in Charlotte for the ensuing week, the added
interest of students in expressing their own ideas through
this medium, plus the new weekly schedule of events
and meetings on campus and the general club and faculty
announcements, all make up the new Queens Current.

QUEENS CHRISTIAN
ASSOCIATION
As a result of the recognition of some of the needs
and questions of the Queens Christian Association mem-
bers, made up of the student body, Q.C.A. cabinet has
sought this year to try to help, but not answer, these
needs. Rather than the more traditional program planned
far in advance, the cabinet's goal is to make the activi-
ties more spontaneous, arising when the need is felt. The
morning worship services and the panel on prejudice are
examples of this thinking.
Christian Re-Emphasis Week was also planned with
this idea in mind. The theme, "What Then Must I
Do?," dealt with students' feelings of helplessness in
various areas of living, including group pressure, cultural
values and foreign affairs. The week was not conceived
to give solutions to these questions, but to stimulate serious
thought and e\'aluation.
Q.C.A. cabinet stresses the fact that it alone is not
the Queens Christian Association; it is merely a body
representing as many groups as possible, set up to guide
the activities of the Association.

co-operation with other organizations on the campus includ-

\\ liile the Recreation Association has endeavored to be-

that if the desire and needs of students as a whole cannot
be met, the helpful participation of a part of the students
makes the work and effort worthwhile.

Dolphin Club is an organization of synchronized swimmers.
After the completion of try-outs in the fall, all of their efforts
are toward the annual water show in March, which is always
a sell-out every night it is gi\'en. Practice and more practice
is the byword.
This year with the theme "The Dream of the Ancient
Mariner" the water was filled with swimming porpoises, pen-
guins, spiders, whales and a big red octopus. The ship covering
one wall and the Chorus reading lines from Coleridge's poem
made this vear's show one never to be forgotten.

In its format of dignity and simplicity, in its
quality of content, the literary magazine serves
as a place where many lines of ideas con\'erge
—a professor's account of a Soviet summer, a stu-
dent's story of living with nuns in Puerto Rico,
an essay to extend Queens' self-study, a poem about
the South and one about a child, sketches of a
country life, and a drawing of wheat. The words
and pictures say what Queens is thinking, what
it believes in, what it is— as different in as many
ways as are the people who make the college.
The lines converge in logos, and yet move out-
ward, offering insight into the inward thoughts
of the people, measuring the depth of study on
campus, indicating appreciation of good literature,
encouraging creative writing and thinking, excit-
ing curiosity, initiating new ideas.
